Vijayawada: Tension and last minute preparations marked the inauguration of prestigious 27th Vjayawada Book Fair being organised under the aegis of Vijayawada Book Festival Society (VBFS) at Swarajya Maidan here on Friday.

Earlier, permission was denied for the conduct of public events citing the security reasons. However, half of the entire ground was sanctioned for the organisers to pitch tents for holding the event.

Every year over 300 stalls used to be set up, as the book fair in the city is one of the largest book fairs in the country. About 390 stalls were set up during the 26th annual book fair in 2014.

However, the number of stalls has reduced to 230 this year and Pratibha Vedika, which is generally set up to conduct literary and cultural activities for the youngsters and children, is missing this time.

Usually, the entry to the fair is allowed from Rythu Bazar facing MG Road and exit towards the State Guest House. Due to change in plan and design, the parking has become a major task for the organisers to handle at the venue. Both entry and exit are towards MG Road, this time.

The first day of the book festival was swarmed up by public, including young and old alike, who had to put up with terrible scenes at parking lot, wasting a lot of time. Meanwhile, the comments of MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao on allocation of inadequate land made heads turn during the inauguration ceremony here on Friday.

The MLA said: “More number of people come to the book festival from nearby districts. No other public event is such a hit. We should look into providing better facilities for the visitors and organisers. Book festival is an important event in the city and the duration of the festival should be extended. Adequate land has to be provided for the organisers in order to make the fair a grand success”.
He asked District Collector Babu A to look into the issue.

After the inauguration of the book fair, centenary memorial of Jayanthi Perumallu was conducted.

Founder president of Jana Vignana Vedika V Brahma Reddy spoke on the occasion while former journalist C Raghavachary presided overthe programme.
