Tirupati: Adding more to its benefaction, the government approved another major project to the small town but high-profile Kuppam ignoring other cities and towns.

The project includes underground drainage system (UDS), storm water drainage (SWD) and a summer storage tank (SST) which will be fed by Handri-Niva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) adding more to the facilities in the major panchayat which is soon to be upgraded into a municipality.

Interestingly, it is first time in the state, may be in the country too, a small town which is hardly having a population of 38,000 and yet to be declared a municipality,

getting the sanction for a modern drainage system UDS thanks to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Kuppam gets these benefits even as other cities, including Chittoor, the district headquarter are not having proper drainage system leave along UDS.

The local leaders, including the panchayat president and others complained to the Chief Minister on the delay in taking up UDS and two other schemes, resulting in Naidu ordering the district administration to take up the project immediately. Kuppam panchayat, seven months back, unanimously adopted a resolution seeking the government to sanction UDS and sent it to the district collector, district panchayat officer (DPO), the Chief Minister and MLA. The DPO sent the proposal to Public Health Department.

The Public Health Department proposed to take up storm water drainage and also summer storage tank along with UDS as one package so as to ensure the completion of all the three initiatives on one go for the town, befitting its VIP stature. Since there was no response from the district administration even after seven months, the local leaders approached Naidu during his recent visit which had a lightening impact.

The district collector immediately set up a 5-member committee, including DPO, CPO (chief planning officer), Kuppam Area Development Authority (KADA) special officer, Rural Water Supply superintendent engineer and Public Health executive Engineer who will be the member convener, to prepare the ground.

The committee had already issued notification, inviting tenders, seeking quotation from the firms for the preparation of the detailed project report.
