Speakers blame government negligence for lack of development

Visakhapatnam: Founder president of Lok Satta and former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan said that north Andhra districts remained most backward and they need special attention to propel them on the path of development.

Interacting with the youth, political leaders, trade union leaders and NGOs at the ‘Dasa Disa’ programme organised by HMTV news channel here on Saturday, the Lok Satta leader opened the debate, on the reasons for the lack of development in north Andhra and said that in spite of reasonable rainfall, major rivers like Nagavali and Vamsadhara, the area could not witness any development.

“Was it due to the negligence of the political leaders of the north Andhra or are people too soft to pressurise the leaders for development? Jayprakash Narayan asked the participants.The infant mortality rate is 48 per 1,000 children much above the State and national average.

Former MLA and PCC secretary Dronamraju Srinivas said that north Andhra had great leaders like Tenneti Viswanadham, Gouthu Latchanna, Bhatam Srirama Murthy and Dronamraju Satyhanarayana. “Many projects came during the last 10 years but the government failed to ground them,” he opined.

Echoing the same CPI leader A J Stalin said, “There was no dearth of leaders but the government policies and negligence kept them short of development.” Citing an example, “After Yeleru canal water was dedicated to the Steel Plant, it was decided to use Raiwada water for agriculture. But contrary to the agreement, the GVMC has been drawing 30 mgd for augmenting drinking water facilities to the city,” he added.

Madhusudhan Varma, principal of Patapatnam Degree College opined that the negligence of education sector was one of the main reasons for the under development of north Andhra. Saiprakash, a local businessman said the government has focused industrial development for Visakhapatnam city and left Vizianagaram and Srikakulam to the vagaries of the nature.
