Visakhapatnam: To create health awareness among the people and transform Vizag into the most beautiful and open defecation-free city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is proposing to construct more public toilets especially at the thickly populated areas in the city. This initiative was mooted by Municipal Commissioner Praveen Kumar during his regular field visit to RTC Complex, railway station areas, Poorna market and other nearby areas on Tuesday.

Despite the corporation’s efforts in renovating and modernisation of public toilets and more focus on encouraging individual toilets, the civic chief noticed that still there is a need for more toilets to ensure stoppage of open defecation.

He asked chief city planner D Venkata Ratnam and assistant city planner Jayaram to immediately identify vulnerable areas with thick population and make estimates.

He felt that equal priority should be given to the city beautification as well as clean and green. Additional director of horticulture M Damodar was also present.
