Eluru: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday reiterated that his government was committed for providing reservations to Kapus. The statement of his during the Janmabhoomi Maaooru programme held at Jaganadhapuram village in Nallajerla mandal of West Godavari district assumes importance in view of the recent efforts by the opposition YSRCP and some Kapu leaders like Mudragada Padmanabham of Kapunadu who have been mounting pressure on the government on this issue.

While Mudragada announced to conduct the Kapu Garjna to unite Kapus to fight against the government which was dragging its feet in implementing the reservation promise, YSRCP president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is trying to win over the Kapus by inducting prominent leaders into his party fold.

As part of this move, Jagan recently called on former Union minister and popular film director Dasari Narayana Rao who is also from Kapu community. In the backdrop of this, Naidu’s statement that the Kapu community will be inlcuded in the backward classes list after getting the report from the Commission appointed on the issue submits its report assumes importance.

Claiming that there were only two castes in the world -- the poor and the rich, Naidu said that he was committed in fulfilling his election promise. He further stated that he had implemented welfare schemes for various castes.

Stating that Backward Classes are backbone to Telugu Desam Party, the Chief Minister said that their interests will be taken care of. “I have set up Kapu corporation and appointed a chairman. I will allot more funds if necessary to the Corporation,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that he was aware of the fact that the Kapu community was financially backward. “The commission is on its work and after its report we will include the Kapus in BC list without disturbing the present reservations of Backward Classes,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that BC leader R Krishnaiah had opposed Naidu’s decision to provide reservations for the Kapus and even said that he would launch agitation in Vijayawada if the government does not reconsider its decision.
