Vijayawada: A round-table on ‘Fuel Rates in International Market- Effects’, organised by the People for India and Tax Payers Association here on Sunday, demanded that the NDA Government supply petroleum products and cooking gas to spare the common man from the burden.

Speaking on the occasion, financial expert and chattered accountant R Shashi Kumar said that NDA Government at Centre had been hiking the prices of petroleum products and cooking gas without any proper indications. A majority of the middle class families were facing severe hardships with the irregular price hike. He said the government must fix prices of fuel and LPG and not allow oil companies to revise it. Petroleum majors increased prices frequently adding to the woes of consumers, he said.

Tax Payers Association general secretary MV Anjaneyulu blamed the successive governments for making false statements that oil companies were facing severe losses. He stated that annual accounts and audit reports of oil companies reveal the fact that no oil company in the country had incurred losses for a decade. He wondered why the government at the Centre was hiking the prices of petroleum products though the prices were down in the international markets. The hike in the prices of fuel had an adverse effect over the price hike of essential commodities. The NDA Government at the Centre should focus on reducing the price of fuel to cater the needs of common people, he demanded.

Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association (APLOA) general secretary Y V Eswara Rao said that it had become a periodical exercise for the BJP-led NDA government to hike and reduce the petroleum prices for every fortnight. Two-wheelers were the most affected by the price hike. There was nothing beneficial for the common people in the NDA government as it was following the fuel policy adopted by the previous UPA regime. No State in India had the highest tax percent of 22.5 on diesel sales. Besides that additionally the government was collecting a VAT of Rs 4 per litre. Several times the lorry owners and petroleum associations had represented the government on the issue. But there was no sign from the government in considering the demands, he said.

APLOA president P Gopala Naidu, Krishna District Lorry Owners Association general secretary S Ramesh Babu, All-India Insurance Employees’ Association (AIIEA) joint secretary JVLN Murthy and others also spoke on the occasion.
