Vizianagaram: RTC bus complexes and railway stations in North Andhra are cramming with commuters as the Sankranti is arriving and all the educational institutions are closed due to holidays. Now the buses and trains are moving with heavy rush and public is forced to fight with others to get seats.
People who are living in distant places are leaving for their villages to celebrate the festival along with their near and dear. As a result, all the bus stands and railway stations are witnessing heavy rush. RTC and Indian Railways are running special services to various destinations. All the busses, which are moving to Srikakulam, VIzag, Parvathipuram, Bobbili, Rajhmundry, Kakinada, Vijayawada and Guntur are running with heavy rush. RTC authorities are happy as they are getting high income. The passengers are quarreling with one another for occupying seats in the packed buses. The private transport operators are looting the public by collecting abnormal price from them towards ticket charges. They are demanding much higher than a flight ticket charge to Hyderabad for advance booking on January 13, 15, 16 and 17. A ticket from Hyderabad to Viziag and Vizianagaram is fixed at Rs 3,000 where as the flight ticket is in the range of Rs 2,000 to 2,500. Even the RTC is also collecting excess fare on special serves running to those destinations.
Bus operators like Model, Srikrishna, Kesineni, Kaveri and others are demanding high charges to Guntur, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Ongole and Chennai. Though reaching destination by buying highly charged tickets is a costly affair, the people have no option than purchasing the tickets to share happy moments with the dear ones. They are unable to get train tickets.
P Ramya, a software engineer working at Hyderabad, said, “I purchased an advance ticket from Vizianagaram to Hyderabad for January 16 by paying Rs 2,500 in air condition bus. Actually, the price of the ticket in normal days is Rs 1,200. But now, I have to pay double the amount than regular fare,” she said.
Malls making a roaring business
On the other hand, the markets and cloth shops are doing good business as thousands of consumers are visiting their malls and shops. Vizianagaram is a good business destination for cloths and other household articles for people living in Odisha, Chattishgarh and Jarkhand also. The consumers and wholesale traders are coming here to purchase the goods in huge quantity.
