Tirupati: The election held for the post of BJP city president here on Wednesday revealed the groupism in the saffron party. Contrary to the expectations of the party leaders, the election became inevitable for the post with five contenders in the field but it ultimately turned into a keen contest between two, Varaprasad and Mohan.

Interestingly, the election became a prestigious issue for the two groups. One group led by TTD Trust board member G Bhanuprakash Reddy has backed Varaprasad. Mohan is supported by many leaders including an OBC leader Jalli Madhusudhan, who is new to the party but emerged as dominant leader in the city within a short period. Another senior woman leader also extended support to Mohan.

Varaprasad has managed to win the city president post with a slender margin of one vote. He secured 23 votes against his rival strong contender N Mohan, who got 22 votes. The remaining three contenders failed to draw even a single vote. Of the total 50 votes, five were absent.

Mohan securing 22 votes has surprised everyone and also shocked the group led by Bhanuprakash Reddy as he is almost dominating the saffron party in the district for long time. He is also having the support of state and national leaders.

A senior party leader said on condition of anonymity that all those opposing Bhanuprakash Reddy joined together and extended support to Mohan. Sources said that senior leaders including former national council member K Shanta Reddy, district president B Chandra Reddy and others lend their support to Mohan enabling him to give a tough fight in the elections for city president post. Thus, the election revealed the groupism in the saffron party.

Meanwhile, Mohan on Thursday complained to party State president Haribabu. In his complaint, he alleged foul play in the election held on Wednesday to the city president post. In a press release here on Thursday, he said party district in-charge K Anjaneya Reddy and returning officer Uma bowed to pressures and declared the election in favour of Varaprasad.

Claiming the support of 27 divisional presidents in the city, Mohan said that he would parade them before the state president, if he did order for a re-election. He further said that he will fight for the people by remaining in the BJP.
