Nellore: Despite Nellore district having huge potential for setting up Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), only few such units have been grounded under the State government’s scheme to support entrepreneurship.

No effective steps have been taken by authorities concerned to utilise the new policy of the government to provide seed capital for new MSMEs. The district has an interesting mix of traditional and modern industry, ranging from small artisan worksheds to huge multi-national companies, and has many traditional handloom and handicraft clusters.

The leather puppets of DC Palli in Marripadu mandal, saw-dust stuffed dolls and wooden chariots of Varigonda, Thunga mats, wooden cutlery cluster of Udayagiri, palm leaf products like garlands, hats, waste paper baskets, trays, artificial flowers, mats etc. of Venkateswaranagar in Podalakur mandal and fabric paintings of Thummur in Naidupet are traditional handicraft clusters in the district.

But when compared to other parts of the state, no significant revenue is being generated from the produces. And, some of these units are languishing in financial distress. The handloom industry is also facing trouble with shortage of working capital, market among others.

The essential composition of these units is apparent with huge percentage of food and agro-based industry and engineering-based industries were among top with 12.6 and 12.3 pc respectively. Miscellaneous products and services constitute 40.8 pc of the total number of units.
