Vizianagaram: The historical district Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh has a lot of tourism potential, but the tourism department in the district is functioning sans permanent head, according to sources. Promotion of tourist spots in the districtcame to a grinding halt due to shortage of staff, sources added.

Though many tourists from West Bengal and Odisha reach Vizag, the preferred tourist destination in the State through Vizianagaram, very few visit the tourism spots in Vizianagaram due to lack of promotion.

The government has decided to construct Shilparamam at Nellimarla, cottages at Chintapalli beach and Thatipudi Reservoir. Recently, the government has approved these projects as part of development of the district. Recently, the district has bagged six tourism projects. As part of tourism projects, Shilparamam would be established at Nellimarla in 20 acres of land with Rs 6 crore. Along with this, the 350-year-old Pedda cheruvu, which is located in the middle of the town, would be developed and boat riding would be introduced in the tank. An amusement park, walking track would also be developed around the lake.

Thotapally Reservoir would be utilised for the tourists and more facilities are proposed to be provided there. Boat riding and tourism cottages would be constructed there. Six cottages at Chintapalli and 20 cottages at Thatipudi Reservoir. Apart from these projects, recently a huge project was approved by the government to be set up at Thatipudi. Cost of the project is around Rs150 crore and it would definitely change the stature of the district, said sources. But the district did not have regular tourism staff and only one officer was deputed from the revenue department and she has been looking after all these activities. S Anita, the special deputy collector, was working as in-charge district tourism officer. Speaking to The Hans India, she said” “We have no staff to monitor the progress of these projects in our district. I am only staffer here to look after all these works. I have informed the situation to the government and waiting for response”.
