Visakhapatnam: The delegates at the 20th congress of National Indian Federation of Women (NIFW) called upon women workers to unite and fight against the forces that were depriving their livelihood and subjecting them to violence.

The meeting was held at the Steel Plant Township on Thursday and saw participation from 700 delegates from 27 States and10 countries.President of the NFIW Aruna Roy, who presided over the meeting, said that there is a need for more awareness among the women to improve their quality of life.

“The federation has been fighting for equal rights and freedom for women for many years and the struggle should continue to achieve results,” she added.She introduced several leaders who are nonagenarians and explained how they achieved certain rights after a long struggle. Pramela Lumumba (91) spoke about her fight against violence in her home town. Lumumba said that NFIW could achieve desired results by staging a united fight.

Navarati Bai of Rajasthan narrated her experience on struggles against male hegemony despite being an illiterate. Delegates from US, Russia and Guyana also spoke about the struggle they have been waging in their countries. The delegates paid tributes to veteran CPI leader AB Bardhan, who passed away recently by observing two minute silence. The meeting also passed a condolence resolution.
