Vizianagaram: Agriculture crop area declined this year by around 25 per cent in Andhra Pradesh this year. Crop Paddy, groundnut, maize and other crops is declined by around 20 percent. As a result, the product also likely to be come down and the price of various grains will increase.

Though the government announced that it would provide water from various irrigation projects, the promises are not yet materialized. Due to unavailability of water accompanied by difficulty in getting loans had reduced the sown area of various crops compared to the normal sown area. As per calculations of agriculture department, maize, groundnut, sugarcane and paddy are declined by around 25 per cent and cotton and red gram have seen a slight growth.

Even the farmers and other agriculture labour are also not getting work. The situation is forcing the daily wage workers to leave for distant places in search of job and income. On the other side, the farmers are not in a position to get loans from banks. Even the private lenders were not giving loan during rabi, which is not an assured season. The geographical area is also shrinking with scanty rainfall during this season.

Bankers are sending notices to farmers who are in their debtors list. Around 12,000 farmers are waiting for loan waiver scheme.

Consequently the crop area was minimized and the experts say this will led to increase in the prices of food grains in future.

K Ramakrishna, a farmer belonging to Cheepurupalli mandal said, “I have four acres of land but I don’t have water facility to sow seeds in rabi season. So I left the land idle. If the Thotapalli project water comes to our area, then I can sow some pulses in my lands. But I don’t have such provision.”

An agriculture officer said, “The farmers are not getting minimum support price for many crops and it led to giving up farming. The farmers are searching other income sources. Even the sugarcane, paddy and maize farmers need to struggle to sell their produce”.
