Visakhapatnam: Collector N Yuvaraj has called upon the public to protect the democracy in the country by knowing the value of vote as it plays a pivotal role in a democratic set up.

Addressing a meeting held on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Monday, the Collector felt that all those who completed 18 years of age must enroll himself or herself as a voter. He informed that the district had secured third position in the State with enrolment of 33 lakh voters.

Underscoring the need for further enrolment of new voters in the district, he said that a vote would help elect public representatives of their choice in a democratic set up.

Compared to yesteryears, now the entire procedure of voter enrolment was made easy online, he added. Municipal Commissioner Praveen Kumar informed that the voter enrolment in rural areas was higher than the urban areas and so the officials shall have to work in co-ordination from the booth-level by holding awareness meetings in slums and agency areas.

In view of ensuing municipal elections, the voter enrolment should be encouraged among all sections. Joint Collector J Nivas, Joint Collector-2 D V Reddy and others spoke.

Later, prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held in elocution, drawing and quiz. The Collector complimented D Priyanka of St Joseph Women’s College for securing first place in the State-level elocution competition. He also praised senior citizens who utilized their voting right more number of times.
