Visakhapatnam: District Collector Dr N Yuvaraj directed the health officials to control maternal deaths, which were being reported in large numbers in the district.

The Collector, who held a review meeting here on Wednesday, told the health officials that many deaths were being reported from the district (three in December last year and nine in January this year). He sought a report on the deaths and suggested that special interest should be shown towards the pregnant women so that their health can be monitored periodically.

He told them to identify patients in the remote villages of the agency areas and send PHC staff, ASHA workers and ANMS regularly to check their health. “Efforts should be taken to supply iron tablets along with nutritious food to the pregnant women suffering from anaemia and thyroid,” he ordered.

Joint collector D Venkat Reddy, District Medical and Health Officer Dr J Sarojini and district health coordinator Dr K Nayak and other medical officials were present in the meeting.
