Finds fault with officials for being mute spectator while granite firms indulge in illegally mining

Ongole: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly public accounts committee, found fault with the mining department, which played a role of silent spectator role while the granite companies were illegally mining and exporting granite. The PAC team led by chairman, Bhuma Nagireddy reviewed the mining activity in the district with the officials at Collectorate on Friday.

Bhuma Nagireddy said that they observed many irregularities in the mining activity going on in the Chimakurthy area and would be submitting a report to the government with suggestions to curb the illegal activity and improve the revenue to the State. The PAC chairman said that the granite companies have looted crores of rupees by mining illegally in the government land.

He played the revenue officials on Victoria granites and expressed his dismay over the fact that assistant director of mines and geology and local tehsildar are oblivious to the fact that the said company is mining in government land for a long time and looting public money.

The committee also questioned the officials on why they behaved like mute spectators, when APMDC allotted 48acres to AP Midwest and 35 acres to Pallava Red companies under AP Midwest granite joint ventures, for a price of Rs 6,000 for cubic metre of granite, when the actual price is around Rs 70,000 for cubic metre.

The committee demanded an explanation from officials and berated them by stating that their silence cost government crores of rupees in revenue. The committee also inquired about allegations on the mining companies in Chimakurthy area. The committee asked the officials to submit a report whether the survey numbers 938/1, 933/2 and 960, where Anand Granites is mining, are government lands or patta lands.

It also ordered enquiry on a complaint that the land of 1.5 acres, belongs to Anjana Devi is occupied and conducted mining by Midwest granite in survey number 103, of RL Puram. The committee pointed out that the commercial tax department lost about Rs 60 crores, as the mining officials permitted the sublease of the land permitted to Anand Granites, to Gem and Imperial granite companies.

The District collector Sujatha Sharma, joint collector Hari Jawaharlal, DRO Noor Basha Khasim, mining department deputy director Sudhakar, assistant director Ramachandra Rao, Ongole RDO Srinivasa Rao and other officials attended the meeting.
