Tirupati: The health and sanitary staff including the contract workers who are working in the Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC), on Tuesday organised a protest against the TMC for introducing ‘work contract’ for cleaning and sanitation works in the city.

The health and sanitary employees under the banner of AP Municipal Workers Union (APMWU) led by its president B Tulasendra staged a dharna in front of the corporation office here on Tuesday. They also abstained from work till noon affecting garbage clearance and also the collection of household waste in the pilgrim city of Tirupati.

Heaps of dumped waste was seen in every street while the dustbins which were full, leading to the waste strewn all around. Speaking to The Hans India, Tulasendra said that the work contract system replacing the contract and outsourcing employees would affect the sanitation and health workers working in the corporation.

It will also pave way for the exploitation of the poor hapless workers. He demanded the TMC to withdraw the work contract system. He said about 1,000 health and sanitary personnel including regular and contract employees are working in the TMC.
