Calls AICC Vice-President ‘political novice’. Says Cong can’t criticise State on development.

Anantapur: Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy while describing AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi as a ‘political novice’ (‘moddabbai’) for his criticism with regard to development in the State, particularly the implementation of MGNREGS, said here on Tuesday that the Congress leaders have no right to speak on the issue.

Responding to Rahul’s criticism during the day while addressing a meeting at Bandlapalle, he issued a statement accusing the Congress leaders of driving the State to backwardness by ‘blindly’ dividing Andhra Pradesh. ‘Till then the State was on the path of progress.’

Palle contended that the Congress leaders have no right to resort to criticism on the issue of development, after failing to include special status in the Bifurcation Act. He stated that the State had stood first in the implementation of MGNREGS, recalling that in 2015-16 the government had spent Rs 434.60 crore, providing jobs to workers, paying them based on a transparent and corruption-free system.

The Minister stated that this was in contrast to Rs 2,820.45 crore spent on the programme during the last ten years. He alleged that during 2006-07 and 2012-13 the Congress government had spent Rs 88 crore and Rs 362 crore respectively on MGNREGS works which were marked by ‘wasteful spending’ and ‘corruption’.

The works did not benefit the workers or the district. On the other hand, the TDP government had utilised the scheme for water projects and construction of farm ponds, making payments to workers in a transparent manner, he said.

Palle asserted that while Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was striving for developing the State in coordination with the Centre, the Congress leaders, who lost deposits in the 2014 elections, were ‘shedding crocodile tears’ for the people of the State.
