Vijayawada: It is now the turn of Muslim minorities to demand that the government raise their quota and also extension of political and employment reservations. Leaders of the Muslim Intellectuals Forum told media persons that they would organise a massive convention in the city in the next couple of months to press their demands.

The forum leaders, legislator Jaleel Khan and former legislator Sheik Nasarvali, told media persons that a majority of their members were suffering in poverty. Educational and employment opportunities were not reaching them with the existing 4 per cent reservation, they said and demanded that the government raise the quota to 8 percent and extend it to employment and also in politics.

Jaleel Khan said that the Muslim population is more in Kurnool, Kadapa, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna districts where they were used as vote bank. He further said that Muslim voters in other districts also can decide the victory of any political party at the time of elections. However, he regretted that the parties were using the community only for votes and maintained that they would not remain silent if they are continued to be ignored.

Jaleel Khan also found fault with the government for ignoring the protection of Wakf lands in the State. He said that majority of the lands were encroached and illegally occupied and added that they should be restored to the Wakf committees. The leaders said that they would meet Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu soon and submit a representation listing out their charter of demands.
