Visakhapatnam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s transformation is his vision of “Blue Economy” in its widest sense. Addressing a mammoth gathering at the RK Beach soon after the Operational Demonstration which was part of the International Fleet Review here on Sunday, Modi said the blue chakra or the wheel in the National Flag, represented the potential of the Blue Economy.

Stating that an essential part of this pursuit has been the development of India's coastal and island territories, just not just for tourism, the Prime Minister said. we want to build new pillars of economic activity in the coastal areas and in linked hinterlands through sustainable tapping of oceanic resources.’’

Strengthening marine research, development of eco-friendly, marine industrial and technology base, and fisheries are other elements of India’s goal. In this endeavour, he said he saw youth in the coastal areas as true assets and they have a natural and deep understanding of the Oceans. They could lead the way in the development of blue economy in India, he added.

In partnership with all the coastal states of India, Modi said he wanted to shape a special program of skilling India's youth in the coastal areas of the country. Impressed with the rapid development of the Visakhapatnam city after the Hudhud cyclone, the Prime Minister said he was privileged to visit the city.

The city has a special place in the heart of all Indians. My last visit to Vishakhapatnam was in October of 2014. At that time, Cyclone Hudhud had left the city shattered in pieces. But, the people of Vishakhapatnam smiled in the face of adversity, ‘’he said to a thundering applause.

He reiterated that it was a tribute to the city that within 14 months, people had risen against all odds to welcome the Navies from across the continents in this International Fleet Review. A little over a year ago, we saw the full fury of the ocean.

Today, thanks to the spirit of the people of Visakhapatnam, we are discussing how the oceans can be a source of economic prosperity for all of us. For its courage and resolve, we all salute the city of Visakhapatnam’’ Modi said.
