Visakhapatnam: The Steel Plant Employees’ Union (Citu and SWFI) here on Monday demanded that the State government initiate necessary steps on war footing with regard to the water supply to Visakha Steel Plant as it’s main water source Kanithi Balancing Reservoir has water levels sufficient for only 21 days of plant operation.

The union vice-president, J Simhachalam, held the State government responsible for the present water crisis.
He alleged that the government had endorsed the rights on the Yeleru main canal, which was built by the plant by spending about Rs 500 crore in 2003, to the Visakha Industrial Water Scheme Corporation.

Later, the State government had agreed to supply 45 MGD of water to the plant to cater to the needs of the plant, which was not being implemented. He informed that only 27.16 MGD of water was only supplied in November, 26.45 MGD in December and 16 MGD in January. The Kanithi Balancing Reservoir will be reaching the dead storage level within 21 days, he said.

Charging the government with showing vindictive attitude towards Public Sector Undertakings, he questioned whether the plant management had secured any assurance from the government at the time of entering MoU with the government in the recent CII Summit for additional water supply to the proposed plant expansion.

Union president J Ayodhyaram, general secretary Y T Das and Citu national council member N Rama Rao questioned the government’s political interest for not preferring a lift irrigation project from Godavari to help supply 400 MGD of water to the city when it had completed the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project in no time spending Rs 1,600 crore.

They also pulled up Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Anakapalli MP Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao for not taking any responsibility of the plant who assured of all steps during elections to Lok Sabha by wooing the steel employees to casting their votes in favour of INTUC.
