Vijayawada: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) State secretary P Madhu here on Friday demanded the State government to constitute SC/ST Commission without further delay.

In a statement, Madhu said that the two commissions have been defunct since 2007 ignoring the rights of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. He recalled that the government had constituted the SC/ST Commission in 2001 following series of agitations.

The commission headed by Justice Punnaiah with five members worked for five years, he said and added that the Congress government subsequently had constituted a commission for two years. However, since 2007, the commission had no chairman, he said.

The CPM leader expressed concern over increasing atrocities on the SCs and STs in the State and emphasized the need to protect their rights. He wanted the State government to constitute a commission for the SCs and STs without further delay and ensure that the commission works for the protection of these neglected sections.
