Eluru: Scores of people from backward classes have begun relay hunger strike at the Collectorate here on Monday, demanding the government to protect the reservations allotted to backward classes as per the Constitution.

The BCs led by Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, West Godavari district unit reached the Collectorate and began the relay fast on Monday morning.

District president Varthanapalli Kasi, State committee vice-president Satyanarayana Reddy, city president Maragani Chandrakiran and Gowda Sangham Eluru unit preident Kasani Ramesh Goud addressed the agitators.

They stated that it was against the social justice to include Kapu community in BC list. They pointed out that the reservations were provided by the Constitution only to socially oppressed classes and maintained that Kapus were not backward. They demanded the government to conduct a comprehensive caste survey on the BC communities.

The Association district vice-president PV Peddiraju, BC JAC convenor Veeravalli Srinivas, BC Women cell president G Bala Tripura sundari and others also spoke.
