The University of Calicut emerged as champion in the South Zone inter-university volleyball tournament for women by winning all the three league fixtures at the National College grounds here on Monday.

Machilipatnam: The University of Calicut emerged as champion in the South Zone inter-university volleyball tournament for women by winning all the three league fixtures at the National College grounds here on Monday.

According to the information given by the Krishna University Sports Board secretary N Srinivasa Rao, University of Calicut defeated University of Madras, Chennai by scoring 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 and later trounced MG University by scoring 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21.

MG University took the second spot while Hindustan University, Tamil Nadu took the third place. Player of the Tournament was awarded to M Sruthi (University of Calicut), Saranya (MG University) as best spiker, Deena Pailochan (Hindustan University) as best setter and T Saranya (Hindustan University) as Best Libro in the tournament.

Four teams--University of Calicut, Calicut, MG University, Kottayam Hindustan University, Tamil Nadu and University of Madras, Chennai qualified from South Zone for the all India inter-university tournament to be held at Kurukshetra University from March 16 to 21, said KRU Sports Board secretary N Srinivas Rao.
