Srikakulam: Weight lifting academy including multi sports coaching centre has failed to take off in Srikakulam. Sydney 2000 Olympics bronze medal winner in weight lifting event Karanam Malleswari decided to start multi sports complex in Srikakulam as she is a native of Oosavanipeta village in Amudalavalasa mandal.

Now, she is working as general manager in Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Haryana. Malleswari initiated steps to start sport complex and weight lifting academy by motivating Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) officials two years ago with an aim to serve her native district and to encourage talented youth in sports and games.

As part of it, SAAP officials prepared proposals and requested district officials for suitable land and for preparation of detailed project report (DPR). Karanam Mallesawari also visited Srikakulam district and verified 33 acres of land at Patrunivalasa village limits in Srikakulam rural mandal one year ago along with District Collector P Laxminarasimham.

“We prepared preliminary report for multi sports complex at Patrunivalasa and identified 33 acres of land along with revenue officials and sent report on it to Chief Commissioner for Land Administration (CCLA) through District Collector,” said District Sport Development Officer (DSDO) B Srinivasa Kumar.

“For all facilities like land development, internal roads, water facility, buildings and sports equipment, Rs 50 crore required initially,” the DSDO said.

“Karanam Malleswari assured that she will pool up funds through corporate people, various organizations and foundations if government allotted land,” the DSDO explained.

“Karanam Malleswari asked us to allot suitable land for multi sports academy near Srikakulam and we prepared report on it as government is willing to allot land on lease basis and on a condition that further alienation of land is restricted,” said the then Srikakulam Tahsildar, Sadhu Dilip Kumar.
