Rajahmundry: NREGA works have been giving good results in Rampa Chodavaram Agency area and migrations have been declining as tribals are getting good profits through these works. ITDA, Rampa Chodavaram is supplying cashew nut plants to tribal farmers through employment guarantee scheme in order to provide them with permanent assets and giving a loan waiver of Rs 1.25 lakh per acre for three years for the preservation of plants.

But the yield has been coming down for cashew nut for the last few years due to low rainfall. ITDA has been taking up steps to increase the yield in 40,000 acres belonging to 20,000 tribal farmers and decided to dig one farm pond for every acre to stock the water through Panta Sanjeevani programme. The government has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for digging farm ponds through the employment guarantee scheme and the pond was filled up with rainwater.

He obtained a yield of more than 500 kg as fish grew up to two kg in six months. He had let NREGA workers to catch the fish, sold the fish in the market and earned Rs 80,000.

The groundwater level of his cashew nut plantation also increased due to the farm pond. He obtained an income of Rs 2 lakh through cashew nut and Rs 15,000 through other crops. Speaking to The Hans India, Project Officer, ITDA, Rampa Chodavaram, KVN Chakradhar Babu explained that fish cultivation in farm ponds along with the cultivation of crops like cashew nut has been yielding encouraging results and added that 80 per cent of NREGA works are being earmarked for land development and water harvesting in the Agency areas.
