Chittoor: In order to develop Telugu language in the State, the government should allocate Rs 2,000 crore in the budget, said M Devendra Rao, State YSRCP publicity secretary. The then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy had worked for achieving recognition to Telugu language under Pracheena Bhasha category, he recalled.

Speaking to the media here on Sunday, on the occason of International Mother Language Day, Rao said that the government should take up measures to develop and protect the Telugu language. He demanded that the TD government should take steps to make it mandatory for introducing Telugu language compulsory from primary education level in order to strengthen the movement of protecting Telugu language, the government should ensure special reservation for Telugu medium students in job recruitment.

The Governments of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Maharashtra accorded top priority for their respective mother tongues which is apparently lacked in Andhra Pradesh, he decried. He recalled that a resolution was passed at World Telugu Mahasabha held in Tirupati last year stating that usage of Telugu language should be made mandatory in the government communication and correspondence.

The resolution was neglected by the TD government, he lamented. Collector Salmon Arokhya Raju had done remarkable job in protecting the Telugu language, insisting the government employees to wear traditional dress on each Monday. The tradition was later dropped ignoring the importance of mother tongue, Rao said.
