Deverapalli: Hundreds of flue-cured tobacco growers resorted to road blockade on national highway at Devarapali village in West Godavari district on Tuesday evening, demanding the Centre to cut tax on cigarettes. Traffic stranded on national highway for over two hours.

The flue-cured tobacco growers reached Devarapalli this afternoon from North Light Soils (NLS) area in the district consisting of Jeelugumilli, Koyyalagudem, Devarapalli, Jangareddigudem and other areas.

They resorted to road-blockade. The farmers alleged that due to the imposing taxes on cigarettes, the consumers were not purchasing cigarettes. The purchasing capacity came down drastically affecting the flue-cure tobacco farmers. They pointed out that due to the policies of the Central government, a farmer Simhadri Venkateswara Rao recently committed suicide.
