Visakhapatnam: Founder president of National Election Forum EAS Sarma appealed to the Central Election Commission (CEC) to see that the additional provision of casting a vote on ‘NOTA’ button be present in the EVMs or in the ballot papers so that the city people could exercise their franchise freely and fairly in the ensuing municipal elections.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Sarma, who is a former civil servant, felt that it is the responsibility of the CEC to see that the most valuable voting right must not be misused. He sought that NOTA vote be included either in the EVMS or in the ballot paper in all local body elections. If a voter is not interested in any of the names mentioned in the ballot paper, then he could prefer NOTA.

He also suggested if a particular election gets majority of NOTA votes, such election must be cancelled and by-election should be conducted. Similarly, those candidates, who secure highest NOTA votes, should not be allowed to contest at least one term to help protect democracy. He informed that a full-fledged representation will be sent to the CEC after a signature campaign.
