Vijayawada: ‘Swaraksha’, a community awakening caravan to counter human trafficking, reached the city and passed through all important thoroughfares of the city including Benz Circle and Siddhartha Auditorium on Monday.

‘The Hyderabad-based NGO, Prajwala, with the support of the US Consulate General, Hyderabad, is heading the anti-trafficking drive that will cover over 132 million population in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha States by travelling across 53 districts over five months to reach villages and towns where people are at risk of being trafficked and where information rarely reaches. The caravan started in Hyderabad on January 9.

In Krishna district, Vasavya Mahila Mandali, the lead partner of Prajwala in the anti-trafficking drive, in association with the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare, is hosting a series of programmes from February 29 to March 2.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly Mandali Buddha Prasad said, “Society today needs more of social reformers than politicians. He said despite many social reformers strived hard to abolish social evils, human trafficking still exists.

Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari asked the educational institutions, community and parents to take responsibility of ensuring that the children are brought up in a right way. She asked the police officials to strengthen vigil at airports, shipyards and borders to curb trafficking.

US Consulate Officer, Hyderabad, Gabriel Hons –Oliver said that human trafficking has emerged as a global problem. Every country should fight against it.

A rescued and rehabilitated teenage girl shared her story. Two documentaries were screened on countering trafficking of young girls and women. Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s message to the Swaraksha Caravan team was read out.
