Visakhapatnam: Representatives of Forum for North Andhra Development vowed to intensify their struggle for the development of North Andhra. A dharna followed by a public meeting was held at Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Tuesday. Prof B Ramakrishna Rao presided over the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, MLC MVS Sharma said when the previous governments allocated Rs 74, 000 crore for irrigation projects in the budget, the present NDA government allocated only Rs 2,000 crore. Incidentally, the AP government spent over Rs 16,00 crore for Godavari Pushakarams, he pointed out.

The TDP leaders raised slogans “Babu vaste jib vastadi” during the election campaign, but after Chandrababu Naidu came to power, 24,000 jobs were lost in just 20 months. Vizianagaram lost 13,000, Visakhapatnam 1500 and Srikakulam nine, 500, Sharma pointed out.

Sharma also said that the local Ministers were showing much interest in grabbing the government lands instead of showing interest in the development of the region. He said during the past two years, Rs 100 crore was allocated for the city development, but only Rs 37 crore was earmarked for the works of which works worth Rs 87 lakh was only completed.

Prof KS Chalam said north Andhra people have been fighting for the development for the last 45 years, but nothing has been done so far. General secretary of the forum Ajay Sharma demanded Rs 15,000 crore under a special package for the development of north coastal Andhra. He said north Andhra remained backward for decades since the successive governments did not show interest in development of agriculture. People migrated to other parts of the country after factories were closed.

Senior leader of Forum K Polayya said it was a shame that the Finance Minister allocated only Rs 3 lakh for the metro rail project when it needed Rs 16,00 crore.
