Chittoor: District Congress Committee (DCC) president Venugopala Reddy said that the Congress party would never compromise on the demand of granting special category status to the newly formed AP. He said that his party has been exerting pressure on the BJP-led NDA government right from it came to power at Centre.

Addressing a press conference here, the DCC chief said that the AP Congress unit would submit a memorandum with one crore signatures to the Prime Minister on March 12 seeking special status to the State. He stated that the AP Congress would organise Chalo Delhi on March 12 in which top party leaders would take part. The Congress leader alleged that the Modi government has failed to protect the interests of the State.

“Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has miserably failed to convince the Central government for securing special status to AP despite the TDP MPs representing in union cabinet. He slammed the Chief Minister for his failure to get more funds for Polavaram project. The Central government had allocated meagre funds for Polavaram project in the budget which was presented in the Lok Sabha recently. “Only alternative for the Chief Minister is to quit the NDA alliance and prove his integrity for the development of State,” he said.

Reddy further said that APCC President N Raghuveera Reddy has been successful in getting the support of more than 1 crore people for getting special status to AP. He exuded confidence of Congress regaining its past glory under the leadership of AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi. He demanded the NDA government to allocate Rs 15,000 crore for Polavaram project and announce special package for the development of Rayalseema region and also to allocate funds for the construction of capital city.

The DCC chief said that the Prime Minister has moral responsibility to fulfil all the provisions incorporated in the AP Reorganisation Act. He made it clear that the Congress party would emerge as the main political force in the State by next elections. District leaders Sudhakara Reddy, Vinod and other leaders were present. It is significant to note that former Tirupati MP Chinta Mohan has taken a lead in obtaining one crore signatures from the district demanding special status to AP. Earlier, Reddy assured that he would take an initiative for construction of Congress Bhavan in Chittoor shortly.
