Kurnool: District Collector Ch Vijaymohan on Saturday said there is a need for creating awareness by the members of ‘grama aikya sanghalu’ among villagers about the need for developing selected gram panchayats free from open defecation.

Participating in an awareness programme for women on individual latrines, he stated that TTD was constructing the latrines in 32 of the selected gram panchayats, while the RWS department officials have taken up the task in 66 and NGOs in 12. The Collector disclosed that funds have been sanctioned for those who have built their own individual latrines.

These would be released soon to the beneficiaries. He stressed that women should be encouraged to build their own latrines. Vijaymohan suggested that members of grama ikya sangalu could release Rs.5,000 as loan for every family for building individual latrines and that the amount could be returned after the funds were made available by the government. An agreement on this could be reached, he stated.

Among those who attended the programme were members of women’s groups from Adoni, Aspari, Atmakur, Bandi Atmakur, Allagadda mandals.
