Tirupati: Rallies, meetings, competitions and distribution of prizes marked International Women’s Day celebrations here on Tuesday. Speaking at a meeting organised by Tirupati-based NGO RASS at Karakamabadi, 15 km from here, Forests and Environment Minister B Gopalakrishna Reddy said that the TDP government provided financial assistance to 84 lakh women members of 8.73 lakh SHGs functioning in the State.

Reminding that it was late NT Rama Rao who provided equal property rights for women, he said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu following Rama Rao’s footsteps introduced many far reaching schemes for women empowerment.

On the measures for safety and security of women, the Minister said that the government set up standing committees in all local bodies and also fast track courts for resolving the cases related to women including atrocities and criminal attacks. Marking the occasion, the Minister distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions held for the members of women SHGs. Sarpanch Kondamma and others were present.

In Regional Science Centre (RSC) conducted an essay writing completion on the topic of Indian Women in Science and a visual quiz on `Women Achievers’ in association with city-based NGO Prerana Mahila Vedika. Indian Medical Association, Tirupati branch president P Krishna Prasanthi who was the chief guest of the function, gave away the prizes to the winners of the competition and interacted with students, parents and teachers.

Congress party activists led by party State joint secretary R Sridevi also organised a meeting to honour select women who strived for the well being of their families and conducted Seemantham for pregnant women on the occasion of International Women’s Day. Former Congress MP Chintha Mohan and others were also present.
