The system will be implemented across government schools in Guntur to put an end to absenteeism and negligence of teachers in discharging their duties

Amaravati: To crack a whip on teachers who are turning up late to schools and absenting themselves frequently, the State government has decided to introduce the biometric system in government schools across Guntur district beginning from next academic year.

In the first phase, the system will be implemented in 300 schools before extending it to all 3,000 schools in the district. The attendance of both teachers and students would be recorded by the biometric system. The system is already being enforced in schools across Vishkapatnam and West Godavari districts.

In spite of government orders, it is said that more than 50 per cent of teachers working in the government schools are not coming to schools in time and neglecting their duties. This is revealed in a survey conducted by the district education department recently. Even when senior officials like ZP chairperson or ZP chief executive officer inspect schools, teachers do not make it to schools in time.

Consequently, the academic standards are deteriorating in government schools. The education department officials will collect finger prints and iris for the purpose. A record of teachers turning up late to schools would be kept, and three days’ late attendance would cost them a day’s salary. Confirming the same regional director of School Education P Parvathi said: “In a phased manner, the system will be introduced in all government schools.”
