A major road accident led to five people losing their lives at Gollapudi on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway near Vijayawada on Monday. The bus belonging to a private carrier was heading to Hyderabad from Amalapuram with nearly 46 students of Osmania Medical College.

While four students were killed in the accident, 20 other medical students sustained injuries with two students' condition said to be critical. Police officials informed that four students and the driver of the bus died on the spot, one student succumbed to his injuries in Government General Hospital returning from a sports tour.

The bus registered in the name of Sree Kaleswari Travels and operated by Dhanunjay Travels hit a tree on the roadside at around 11.30 pm and was smashed after it turned upside down. While reports stated that the driver was in an inebriated condition which led to the accident, the Vijayawada police are probing into the cause of the accident.

A student who was injured in the accident said that the bus driver is responsible for road accident as he drove at high speed despite the senior students warned him not to drive as he was in a drunken state. However, the injured student further said that the driver after coming to know about hiring another driver became furious and steered the bus towards a tree.
