  • Police have reportedly taken 12 persons into custody in the case

It is said that the police are finding some more persons involved in the case as they question the accused and suspects in their custody. However, the police are yet to show the arrests in the case. The accused reportedly trapped a Catholic priest heading a church in the city, drugged him and took video involving a woman in the case.

The extortion began in 2012 with the gang trapping a junior priest in Nandigama and continued with the trapping of a senior most priest in the city. The gang had extorted over Rs 1.35 crore from the priest on different occasions by threatening to release the videos involving him in intimate scenes with a woman.

Interestingly, the woman involved in the case was also a member of the gang, who is yet to be taken into custody. Sources said that the Task Force sleuths from the city have been visiting different villages in the district to trace the woman in question. Meanwhile, members of electronic media met the city Commissioner of Police D Gautam Sawang on Monday and sought clarification on the involvement of media persons in the extortion case.

The CP told the media persons that the case is under investigation and so far they could not find the involvement of any media persons. However, he said they have evidence to prove the involvement of a former journalist of electronic media and would reveal the names once they complete the investigation.

Members of the gang had targeted the Catholic priests with the help of some insiders of the church. It is alleged that they also took the help of a couple of women to trap the priests seeking their blessings and later offering them late night parties. The police are also questioning some media persons who have carried reports of women making allegations of sexual abuse by the priests in the name of love. The police have already seized the video clips of such news reports telecast by some news channels in the past and were looking into their credentials to establish the crime.
