Visakhapatnam: District Medical and Health Officer Dr J Sarojini flagged off a rally at the GVMC Gandhi statue here to mark World Oral Health Day on Sunday. The rally was aimed at bringing awareness among people on oral health, which is equally important as physical health.

Before flagging off the rally, Dr Sarojini said that dental health camps would be conducted in villages on March 21and demos on brushing techniques in all schools on March 24. Oral ill-health also causes heart diseases with the bacteria formed inside the mouth. She said that of all the body cancers, 30 per cent were oral cancers. This was due to the chewing of gutkha, khaini, tobacco powders available with different names and smoking.

“As oral health is part of total health, everybody must take necessary health tips regularly,” she said. About the precautions to be taken, she informed that two-time brushing was necessary with a paste having chloride content. The toothbrush need to be changed once in every three months.

Cleaning mouth soon after eating food was important. The parents should take care of their children while they brush daily. The government had already set up special oral health wings in PHCs, Area Hospitals and KGH. Public could utilize the facilities, she added.
