Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu called upon the MLAs irrespective of party affiliations to take up water conservation, water management and water storage to make the State drought-free.Appealing people to join hands with the government’s efforts on the occasion of World Water Day in the Assembly on Tuesday, the CM rolled out details of series of steps taken by government to utilise every drop of water to make the State drought-free.

He said that the government had adopted a proactive approach in river linking of Vamsadhara-Nagavali, Krishna-Godavari as well as the proposed Krishna-Penna. “River linking alone is not enough, we need to conserve water to boost the ground water levels through water recharge measures, he said.

Naidu said that these measures would help in augmenting about 90 tmcft of water from ground water sources alone. “The state government proposes to launch an innovative scheme to encourage 10 lakh farm ponds in the State. It would also set up ‘Rain Guns’, for optimum utilisation of water in rain shadow areas to save standing crops,” he added.

The CM said the irrigation department has been mandated with ‘Cascade Development’. “Under this programme, number of cascades would be developed in all the basins of the State by interlinking all the tanks within the cascade. Check dams will be constructed on all minor rivers and streams to recharge ground water, the farm ponds under ‘Panta Sanjeevini’,” he added.
