Speaking to reporters on the occasion, Uma Maheswara Rao said that the 1518-kilometre long left main canal works have been divided into eight packages to speed up the works. He mentioned that he would hold talks with the National Highway authority with regard to the construction of bridge to make sure that canal works would not be affected. He explained that the right main canal works would be completed by June 2016.

He said that the left main canal works would be completed by June, 2017. He maintained that 8.5 tmcft of water has been lifted from Pattiseema project. Out of this, 4.4 tmcft of water has been diverted to Krishna delta and a good yield of 40 to 50 bags is expected this season.

He further said that 7 tmcft of water which comes from Polavaram left canal as well as from rivulets would be released into Yeleru reservoir and another 3 tmcft of water would be used to cater to the needs of Visakhapatnam. Though the availability of water is less in River Godavari, he said that the water from Balimela and Sileru reservoirs has been diverted to cater the needs of 8.7 lakh acres in Godavari delta.

He added that irrigation projects have been taken up with Rs 12,100 crore in the State and made it clear that the Polavaram project would be completed by 2018 by finishing head works, left and right canal works. Irrigation Chief Engineer Haribabu, SE Sugunakar Rao and SE Polavaram left canal Rambabu were present on the occasion.
