Visakhapatnam: Stakeholders and Airport Authority of India officials deliberated at the International Airlines Summit on the prospects of improving the facilities at the airports in Andhra Pradesh that would lead to the development of State by double digits. They also hoped that the new aviation policy on the anvil would bring in some changes in the age-old Acts that would attract the airline operators to pitch their tents in the State.

  • Say Vizag not viable for new operators
  • Hope that the new aviation policy would enable them to operate more flights in AP and increase international services

The summit was jointly organised by the AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation, Indian Association of Tour Operators and Association of India and Tours and Travels of Andhra Pradesh here on Saturday. But the chairman of Indian Association of Tour Operators Subhash Goel made it very clear that unless the present traffic rights rules were not changed, it would not be viable for the new airline operators to make Visakhapatnam as destination.

"The airline operators would assess the economic viability from the point of origin and destination and according to them Visakhapatnam was not financially viable,’’ Goel said. He suggested that the AP government should see that Visakhapatnam took lead in India by opening up the skies doing away with the traffic rights and become at least a transit point for air services for the South East Asian countries.

He hoped that the new aviation policy for which draft has been made ready, would bring in some relaxation in the rules that would attract international air services. Tariq Husain Butt, head of the marketing, south, Airport Authority of India, said the air services in AP were impressively growing and by 2020 over 2.41 million people would be flying in and out.

He said India has free traffic flow agreement with 18 ASEAN and SAARC countries except for Philippines, Laos, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Executive director of Air India, South, K Hariharan, said 10 ATR aircraft would be introduced for regional operation in AP and of them 3 aircrafts would be launched in June this year.

Local MP Dr K Haribabu too hoped that the new aviation policy would augur well for Andhra Pradesh and India in general and he was specific about increasing infrastructure at the airports. Directors of Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada Airports were present.
