Vijayawada: ‘Food in Diabetes and Hypertension’ was discussed during the health education programme conducted by Vasavya Nursing Home here on Saturday. Nutrition specialist B Kusuma Neela said that more number of people were being affected because of unhealthy and sedentary life style, lack of physical exercise and unhealthy eating habits these days. Food was an important source that nurtures human body and the disorders that occur due to lifestyle problems can be curbed with intake of right food in necessary quantities, she said.

Diabetes might occur in infants, adults and during pregnancy. In any type of diabetes, maintaining diet was very important because it helps to contain the blood glucose levels. Complications like glaucoma, neuropathy, nephropathy, brain stroke and other are closely linked to intake. Foods like sugar, jaggery, honey, potato, highly polished rice, and maida should be strictly avoided. Millets, whole grain, ragi, jowar, all leafy vegetables, and select fruits would help in controlling diabetes, said Kusuma Neela. Dr Olas Gora and others were present.
