Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) passed a resolution on Monday asking the State government to provide financial assistance for implementation of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme to provide drinking water in the remote areas of the city.
Mayor K Sridhar chaired the council meeting held on Monday. The issue of AMRUT was included in the agenda.
The Central Government is implementing AMRUT in urban areas in different parts of the country to provide drinking water, to improve the underground drainage system, storm water drains, urban transportation etc.
Out of the four subjects, the VMC has decided to implement the scheme for drinking water supply.
The Central government has allocated Rs 73.5 crore to the city for implementation of AMRUT. While the share of Central government is 33.33 per cent, the share of state government is 20 percent. The VMC has to bear the remaining 46.66 per cent, which will be big burden to the civic body.
Referring to AMRUT and drinking water supply in the city, the Mayor told the Council that 1.25 lakh families in the city have drinking water facility against the total of 1.7 lakh families living in the city.
Mayor Sridhar said the implementation of AMRUT will be very useful to the city as thousands of families may get drinking water in future.
The YSRCP floor leader, B Punyaseela, said the VMC was already facing financial crunch and questioned how the civic body could spend matching grant of Rs 14 crore for AMRUT.
The Mayor said the Central government had given four options for it. He said the 46.67 per cent funds could be spent by VMC from its own resources or with the 14th Finance Commission funds sanctioned by the Government. He said if the civic body could not provide funds from these two sources, it can take the help of the State government.
He proposed to take help from the State government for implementation of AMRUT in the city. The Council has passed the resolution on the proposal.
However, the YSRCP corporators have protested over the decision and asked the Mayor to make some changes to the proposal. But, the Mayor refused to do so and Council passed the resolution as TDP has absolute majority in the Council. The YSRCP corporators staged a walk out for a brief period and came back to the meeting.
