Vijayawada: Fifteen passengers in a Chilakaluripeta-bound Indra AC bus of the APSRTC had a miraculous escape thanks to the alert driver of the bus as bus caught fire here on Wednesday. The engine of the bus AP 07 Z 0101) belonging to Chilakaluripeta depot, caught fire near the in-gate of Pandit Nehru Bus Station terminal around 11.30 am.

Driver M S Naik first saw smoke emanating from the gearbox as the bus approached PNBS terminal. He immediately stopped the bus and all the 15 passengers got down near the out gate of the bus stand. The bus was about to halt in the arrival block for the next trip. Fire and emergency personnel, along with police, rushed to the spot and put out the flames.

The fire personnel brought the fire under control after half-an-hour. The driver’s cabin and the interior parts of the bus were burnt partially. Battery short circuit is suspected to be the cause of fire, but investigation is on. Speaking to The Hans India, RTC Executive Director N Venkateswara Rao said that the loss could be around Rs 50,000. “Short-circuit might be the reason for the fire, but an investigation is on to get to the bottom of the accident,” he said.
