Vijayawada: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which has appointed party presidents to five states including Telangana on Friday, is finding it difficult to take a decision on the successor to K Haribabu in Andhra Pradesh. The main reason for the indecision on the part of the central leadership of the BJP is because of the differences between two groups in the party in the state.

While one group wants MLC Som Veerraju to be the new president of the state BJP, another group which also enjoys the support of a Union minister wants that Haribabu should be given a second term. The group that is lobbying for continuation of Haribabu feels that since the party is an ally of the TDP in the state it would be better to continue Haribabu as the state president. It may be mentioned here that Haribabu and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu belong to the same community.

Haribabu is also said to be a person who adopts soft attitude towards the TDP. But the section which supports Veerraju feels that if the BJP has to emerge as a force to be reckoned with by 2019, it should have a leader like Veerraju who is known for his strident stand against the TDP. Veerraju belongs to the Kapu community and is a close friend of film star Pawan Kalyan. It was Veerraju who had introduced Pawan Kalyan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is learnt that even Pawan Kalyan is in favour of Veerraju as president of the state unit of the BJP.

The party central leadership has been holding consultations with the state leaders to resolve the issue. However, with no consensus emerging between the two groups, the party is likely to entrust the responsibility to find a solution to the issue to the national secretary Ram Madhav. Party sources indicate that Ram Madhav would take up the issue after his return from J&K where he has been busy in the formation of the coalition government with the PDP.
