Visakhapatnam: Minister for Rural Development and Housing Kimidi Mrunalini said an extent of six lakh acres would get water for the ensuing kharif season through NTR Jalasiri, MNREGA and watershed schemes.

Addressing a meeting of DWMA project directors of all the 13 districts and watershed scheme officials here on Tuesday, the Minister asked the officials to complete all the borewell works by June-end.

The Minister said the State has been facing problems after the bifurcation and the government has been making all efforts to address the problems of the rural sector with a main aim of improving the agriculture output.

She asked the officials to take up works by keeping in view all the rules and regulations and to benefit maximum number of people in the rural sector.

She said under Chandrannabata, CC roads were laid to an extent of 3,800 km during the last quarter of previous year and during the current fiscal it was targeted to lay roads to an extent of 4,000 km.

With the same spirit, borewells should be installed under NTR Jalasiri programme, the Minister told the officials. She said under phase-1 of NTR Jalasiri, it was targeted to provide power connections to 2,028 borewells by this month-end.

Under phase- 2, around 1,24, 349 borewell installations would be completed by June-end so that the farmers get water for kharif season, she added.

The Minister said Neeru-Chettu programme was launched to recharge the sinking groundwater and similarly, farm ponds would be dug on a priority basis.

This year alone, six lakh farm ponds would be dug, she said and directed the officials to improve 432 watershed projects in the State.

Commissioner for rural development B Ramanjaneyulu said top priority was being given to MNREGA works in the State. Last year, works worth Rs 4,400 crore were taken up and this year the target has been set for Rs 5,300 crore, he added.
