Vijayawada: Asserting that his government was committed to the empowerment of deprived, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said all welfare hostels in the State would be upgraded as residential schools in next three years besides equipping them with modern infrastructural facilities.

Addressing a large gathering here on Thursday on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, he said a 125 feet tall statue of Ambedkar would be installed in Amaravati.

He unveiled a plaque for the same at a programme held in a function hall. Further, he added that Ambedkar birth anniversary celebrations would be held for the next one-year. The CM along with Ministers, TDP leaders, and district officials paid rich tributes to Ambedkar by garlanding his statue.

On the occasion, he distributed assets worth Rs 1,141 crore to the eligible beneficiaries under various schemes. He gave away Dalit Ratna awards to 16 eminent personalities. Earlier, Dalit activists led by Jupudi Prabhakar took out ‘Ambedkar Divya Jyothy’ rally from DRR Indoor stadium to Tummalapalli Kalakshetram.
