Visakhapatnam: Former Union secretary EAS Sarma said that the State government celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti with compassion, but a glance at the plight of the SC families rehabilitated at M1 block near Madhurawada and K1 block near Kommadi should dampen the spirits of all those who had taken part in that celebration on Thursday.

  • Political parties and leaders celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar on a grand note recalling his services to the nation. But fail to strive for the uplift of Dalits who are languishing in poverty, said former Union secretary EAS Sarma

More than a thousand Dalit families were residing in five recognised slums along the railway track for more than three decades. They were eking out their livelihood by doing petty jobs in and around the railway station and nearby shops. They were forcibly evicted one fine morning without prior notice about five years ago and in the name of rehabilitation and were shifted to Madhurawada (M1 block) and Kommadi (K1 block).

The living conditions at these blocks are pitiable. During a recent visit, Sarma said he found the situation unlivable for human beings. The blocks were found to be a haven for criminals, posing a threat to the safety of women. Uprooted from their livelihood in the city, the residents were forced to part with one third of their daily wages to travel to and fro to the city every day for their livelihood.

In the absence of a school nearby, many children had lost two to three years of education. The most important threat that the residents face is the deterioration of the strength of the buildings which, as a result of poor construction, have developed cracks and might collapse anytime. GVMC is perhaps blissfully unaware of what is going on at these blocks.

In a letter to chief secretary SP Tucker on Friday, Sarma requested him to order investigation into the sub-standard building construction at these two blocks so as to expose the unholy links between the GVMC and the contractors.
