Vijayawada: With just three months on hand for the Krishna Pushkarams that are set to start on August 12, the officials are planning to give a new look to the city canals and the airport road. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had already instructed the officials to keep the canals and the airport road ready for the Pushkarams.

The beautification of the canals and airport are on fast track with the district administration and the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation working hard. The Chief Minister himself had personally inspected the works on airport road from Vijayawada to Gannavaram and had instructed the officials to streamline the electrical lines.

He had even expressed his displeasure over the officials leaving the zigzag electrical lines and the electrical poles. The road with central lighting and plantation gives a new look, but the surface electrical lines were making the road unattractive. The Chief Minister is understood to have expressed his displeasure over the officials leaving the electrical lines and not changing the poles.

The Chief Minister had also instructed the officials to make the busy MG Road beautiful for the Pushkarams. As the road forms part of the airport road, the Chief Minister had directed the officials to lay underground cables and remove surface cables all along the road. He had also instructed the officials to develop the sprawling Swaraj Maidan (PWD Grounds) as City Square by removing all encroachments.

The City Square should reflect the people-friendly environment for the visitors during the Pushkarams and even after, he added. As the flyover at Ramavarappadu, which is part of the inner ring road is nearing completion, the Chief Minister had instructed the officials to clear the encroachments on the Ryves Canal here and take up beautification.

Accordingly, the officials have cleared the encroachments on Friday and shifted the families to the Jakkampudi Colony. The Chief Minister plans to open the flyover for the public use once the encroachments are cleared and beautification is added. The flyover, once brought into use, is set to divert the Kolkata-Hyderabad vehicular traffic to the inner ring road without entering the city between Gollapudi and Ramavarappadu.

According to sources, the administration is ready to spend over Rs 300 crore for canal beautification and also the beautification of the airport road in the next two months. Krishna District Collector Babu Ahmad and Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian are closely monitoring the beautification works along the canals and the airport road.
