Ongole: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to farmers to construct farm ponds, rain water harvesting pits and check dams to conserve water by making the most of Neeru-Pragati, Neeru-Chettu and Panta Sanjeevani schemes, introduced by the State government.

The Chief Minister toured Prakasam district on Saturday to participate in Neeru-Chettu programmes and to review the works of Veligonda irrigation project.

Addressing a public meeting in Singarayakonda, he tried to impress upon the crowd about the severe water crisis being faced by the country by referring to water woes of denizens of Latur in Maharashtra. He said the State government had introduced best practices in the world to conserve water and appealed to people at large to make them successful.

Although the State government was introducing seven-hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers besides several subsidies for seeds and fertilisers, he said there was no use of all those efforts when water was not available for crops.

“The situation is so grim that we have to depute police to see to it that water is released from Nagarjuna Sagar. As the Krishna water is not coming from upper riparian states, we have received only 65 tmc ft of water so far,” he lamented.

Explaining the benefits of interlinking rivers, he said Krishna would receive 10 tmc ft of water from Godavari from June 1. He said when water would be available in Krishna, it would be diverted to drought-hit areas.

On Veligonda project, he said 53 tmc ft of water could be saved and would supplied to western areas in Prakasam district once the project was completed to attend to the drinking water and irrigation needs of people. He instructed officials to complete the project at the earliest.

Meanwhile, he also appealed to his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao to work in tandem with the AP government to help resolve water issues pertaining to two Telugu states. He also urged the Union government to resolve the outstanding issues between the sibling states besides requesting special packages for Rayalaseema and Uttarandhra regions.
