Vijayawada: CPM politburo member Prakash Karat said the influence of neo-liberal economic policies have badly affected our political system, agriculture, finance and industrial sectors. The CPM leader was delivering a lecture on ‘25 years of Liberalisation and its Experiences’ at Makineni Basava Punnaiah Vignana Kendram and Prajasakthi Book House at the I V Palace auditorium here on Sunday.

He released two books written by late Makineni Basavapunnaih on the occasion. He said India witnessed an adverse change since the implementation of Neo-liberalised economic policies in India since 1991 which made rich richer and poor poorer in the last 25 years and widened the economic disparity.

He blamed Congress and BJP for implementing same kind of policies because the ruling class in India has accepted these reforms. Karat said the international capitalists and the BJP were going hand-in-hand and posing a threat to the country and democracy in India and underlined the need for social transformation in the country since BJP forces were attacking Dalits and women in the country.

He expressed concern over attempt by Hindutva forces to take control of the country and it must be opposed. Recalling the implementation of liberalisation policies in India, Karat said former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao kick-started the liberalisation policies and then Finance Minister Manmohan Singh implemented them.

He said rich became richer and middle class became poor in many countries including India, UK and the US due domination of international capital. Industry, agriculture, finance and other sectors in India were badly hit by globalised financing pattern, he added. the CPM former chief said Nehruvian model of State capitalism failed to yield results in India so the ruling class welcomed global capital.

Referring to the latest Central budget, he said the BJP government has gave away Rs 6 lakh crore to the big corporates. He alleged that natural resources, land, minerals were being given to the big corporates and it was making the rich richer in the country. He said lands of the poor were being forcibly acquired to hand them over to foreign companies.

He said the basic services like supply of drinking water, public health were being privatised. Instead of serving the poor, the governments in India were privatising the basic services thus depriving them to the poor, he added. Noting that the share of government in the public sector banks was coming down from 100 per cent to 60 to 80 per cent gradually and it would ultimately leads to privatisation of public sector banks, he said IDBI was the first bank in India to be privatised by the government.

He said the industry, agriculture and other sectors were badly affected due to inflow of capital from other countries and Indian companies were losing their productive capacity. He recalled that the BHEL had lost 30 per cent share in the market in recent years. CPM politburo member B V Raghavulu, CPM Andhra Pradesh secretary P Madhu, State committee member Ch Baburao, district secretary R Raghu and other leaders present on the occasion.
